Because the arch design of Quonset huts meant that the walls were curved where they met the floor, it was difficult to place furniture and machinery against the walls. The design was later reconfigured with short straight walls on the side that made sense for uses that could not utilize the curved space on the original design. An added bonus of the new design was that the components of the structure disassembled into more pieces and was not as heavy. And the curved arc frame introduced by the advent of Quonset huts is still used by a lot of the current portable steel building manufacturers.
